ICTs and elections in Africa

The Panos Institute West (PIWA) has launched a media production contest on ICTs open to all print and broadcast media journalists from West and Central .

Prizes will be awarded to the best print articles and radio programmes on the theme ICTs and elections in .

Articles or radio programmes should focus specifically on one of the following issues:

  • the use of Internet during campaigns (”cybercampaigns”, public debate using Internet) ;
  • impact of Internet on campaigns and elections;
  • mobile telephony and elections ;
  • ICTs and elections’ transparency (electoral file, voter card, data transmission security, statistics);
  • ICT theme in election candidates’ programmes.

    For Print Media: Ramata Sore, Burkina Faso, for her article dealing with « Les Présidentielles 2005 au Burkina : grâce au fichier électoral informatisé, les morts auraient pu voter » (Translation : Presidential elections in Burkina Faso : thanks to the digital voters’ file, the dead could have been voting).

    For Radio: Victorine Yao, Côte d’Ivoire, for her audio production on « Elections and Internet.

    Special Prize: Harrison Alechenu Akoh, Nigeria, for his production entitled « Mobile Phone : Transforming the electoral process.
